What is EEBO?

Early English Books Online: EEBO is a database of the fasimiles of books printed in English between the years 1473 and 1700. It is a collection of titles listed in Pollard and Redgrave's Short Title Catalogue (1475-1640) and Wing's Short Title Catalogue (1641-1661) and their revised editions as well as the Thomason Tracts Collection (1640-1661), and the Early English Books Tract Supplement.

From the first book printed in English by William Caxton, through the age of Spenser and Shakespeare and the tumult of the English Civil War, EEBO includes

  • works by Malory, Bacon, More, Erasmus, Boyle, Newton, Galileo
  • musical exercises by Henry Purcell
  • novels by Aphra Behn
  • prayer books, pamphlets, and proclamations; almanacs, calendars, and many other primary sources.

It is a perfect database for locating primary sources for Early Modern and Renaissance Studies courses.
