Students, faculty and staff of Sweet Briar College have automatic borrowing privileges at the Sweet Briar College Libraries. with SBC identification, they also can borrow items from Randolph College in Lynchburg, VA. VCCA Fellows, BLUR participants and Young Writer's Workshop participants should scroll to the bottom of this page for details.
Residents of Campbell, Amherst and Nelson counties may join the Friends of the Library program to obtain a Cochran Library card.
There are no limits on the number of items you may check out. Loan periods for specific items are as follows:
Reserve books, Magazines, Journals, Newspapers, Microfilm, and Microfiche are not loaned outside the library.
We no longer charge overdue fines for books! However, if your book is overdue, you will get a notice. If you lose a book you will be billed, but we no longer charge overdue fines on books. Audio, video and software are charged at one dollar per day. Late reserve items are charged at 25 cents per hour.
In the last week of classes of fall and spring terms, the library holds a pet food drive for the Amherst County Animal Shelter. Donations to the pet food drive will erase all overdue fines, but they will not erase lost material fees.
Renwing your material
Books may be renewed for a second loan period only once and only if no one else has requested the item in the meantime. Videos and CDs may only be renewed for one day. You can renew your items online by going to LION and clicking on the Your Library Records tab. Enter the number shown on the front of your SBC ID and you will have access to a list of all the items you have checked out. Check boxes in the far left column to renew your material. If you prefer, the Circulation staff can renew your material over the phone at (434) 381-6138.
VCCA Fellows, BLUR and Young Writers participants are allowed to check out books from the Cochran Library.
VCCA Fellows can keep books for a period of one month. In order to check out any "media" items, (DVDs, Books on Tape, etc.) VCCA Fellows may leave the media item at the front desk where the secretary for the VCCA will check it out for the VCCA Fellow. The Fellow must notify the secretary that an item (or items) is waiting to be checked out at the Library's front desk.
BLUR and Young Writers participants can keep books for two weeks. Members of both groups must ask their instructor to check out items for them.
